Trewithen Gardens, Truro

Despite being officially declared not to exist by a 1995 DEFRA investigation, the Beast of Bodmin chose the unlikely setting of an ornamental garden to reappear in June 2011.

Head Gardener Gary Long told reporters that he had personally witnessed a "very large, black, cat-like creature" in the grounds, and later found claw marks on one of the garden's rare Clethra Barbinervis - a fragrant Japanese shrub.

Long noted:

"The marks on the trunk are too fine to be dog claws, too high to be a domestic cat and too big to have been made by anything smaller."

If there is any truth in this account then it seems that not just the local livestock has to fear the beast, but even the humble gardener.
