1970 Police investigation recommends prosecuting Smith Detectives investigating allegations made against Smith by boys living in care homes around Rochdale recommend prosecuting him for sexual offences. However, seemingly under threats of 'repercussions' no prosecutions are brought.
1972 Wins Election as MP For Rochdale
May 1979 Named as an abuser in the Rochdale Alternative Press The magazine is the first to publish allegations about Smith's activities at care homes dating back to the 1960s. Private Eye give further prominence to the allegations that same month.
1988 Knighted Despite the long-standing rumours and public accusations made against Smith over the preceding four decades, Smith is put forward for a knighthood. His party demurs and Smith is invested.
10th September 2010 Dies Smith dies of cancer at a nursing home in his home town of Rochdale
21st November 2012 Investigation announced Greater Manchester Police announce they will be investigating allegations from 1974 onwards that Sir Cyril sexually abused boys at a hostel in Rochdale, whilst Lancashire Police will investigate claims pre-1974.
January 2013 Named in connection with Elm Guest House investigations It is revealed publicly for the first time that Smith had been credibly linked with alleged abuse of boys at the Elm Guest House during the 1970s and 80s.
