New Police Diana Murder Enquiry?

Image of Diana in a lift on the night she died

The recent trial of Danny Nightingale - the former SAS sniper soldier who was convicted of possessing dozens of illegal firearms - has, in a strange twist, led to a resurgence of interest in the theory that Princess Diana was killed by the special forces.

It is alleged that a key witness at Nightingale's trial - "Soldier N" - was found to have in his possession a dossier detailing how the SAS were involved in the murder of Diana.

The police are, of course, retaining their professional omerta, aside from the equally traditional media statements which they seemingly can't help themselves making. All that is known for certain is that Scotland Yard are conducting a 'scoping' exercise to look at the evidence to see whether it warrants further, fuller investigation. A spokesman told drooling reporters:

"The Metropolitan Police Service is scoping information that has recently been received in relation to the deaths and assessing its relevance and credibility.

The assessment will be carried out by officers from the specialist crime and operations command. This is not a reinvestigation and does not come under Operation Paget.

On April 7, 2008, the jury concluded their verdict as 'unlawful killing, grossly negligent driving of the following vehicles and of the Mercedesí"

Despite the blandness of this non-committal statement, The involvement of the police is being hyped up the media - who are never so short of space that they can't find inches for a new Princess Di story. The news wires buzz with inch high headlines: "Scotland Yard examines new information on death of Diana, Princess of Wales... SAS link to Princess Diana's Death" and so on.

It is a welcome shot in the arm for the Princess Di story which has, in recent years, shown signs of weakening its hold on the public imagination due to inconveniences such as war, terrorism, natural disasters and economic disaster.

We await further news with bated breath.
