Robert of Knaresborough

Posted in >

This bare cave, carved into the sandstone cliffs that tower over the river Nidd as it wends through Knaresborough, was home to Robert of Knaresborough: a hermit who lived there sometime during the 12th or 13th centuries. Once, pilgrims came here to be close to the holy man, or in search of healing or succour. Today people still come to look into the chilly blackness that was his home and to wander at his motivations.
