IntroductionTo most of us, the passing of our time on earth is marked in some small way. We are the subject of a short, formal ceremony of some kind, toasted down the pub and then linger on in memory and anecdote - often for decades after we die.
But in some tragic cases, people are denied even this level of small dignity and are simply left in official limbo - "missing presumed dead." It is perhaps the worst fate of all - if not those who have gone missing, but for those left behind. Unable to mourn in full, certain of the death of a loved one but left with the small voice of hope to taunt them in the night. In many such cases, the missing person is presumed to have met their deaths at the hand of another - and in those cases the pain is particularly acute, a mystery for the casual observer, but an endless hell for those left behind looking for answers.
