Sutcliffe's home until the move to Garden Lane in Heaton. It was here that he was first questioned by police about an attack on a prostitute. Shortly after the 'stone in sock' attack, he was visited by police investigating a complaint made by a prostitute that a client had hit her. The sharp-eyed woman had noted down Trevor Birdsall's number plate and the police had tracked down Birdsall who implicated Sutcliffe in turn.
From today's perspective it might seem incredible, but Sutcliffe was not charged as the woman didn't want to press charges. He maintained that there had been an altercation, but that he had only hit her with his hand and he received nothing more than a stern warning from the officers.
