IntroductionIf Britain is short of wealth and power, it must surely boast a princely surfeit of ghosts, spectres and ghouls. From shrieking ladies to poltergeists and the shades of kings to gruesome phantasms, there is no hamlet, village or town that doesn't play host to the undead. In places, the skies reverberate to the sights and sounds of battles long past.
In others, figures seemingly roam among us seeking to have historical injustices righted, or condemned to an eternal half-life amid the shadowed ruins of their former homes. Their cause is unknown. Whether they truly are the spectres of the dead, 'recordings' of past events somehow imprinted on the landscape or merely an artefact of the human mind, there is little doubt that their number will continue to grow for centuries yet to come.
