Ashworth Hospital

Posted in > >

One of Britain's three specialist, high security mental institutions, Ashworth is currently home to moors murderer Ian Brady - who was declared criminally insane in 1985 and moved from the regular prison population. The majority of its patients are referred to Ashworth from the criminal justice system, and often suffer from severe personality conditions such as paranoid schizophrenia or cormorbid personality disorders. The average stay of a patient is 6 years but in the most intractable cases (such as Brady) there is no upper limit to the amount of time a patient can be detained here for treatment.
