Leavesden Mental Hospital

Posted in >

Originally known as the Metropolitan Asylum for Chronic Imbeciles, the Leavesden Asylum finally closed its doors in 1997 - becoming (inevitably) a private housing estate.

Conditions were - as in all such institutions - quite severe from a perspective of order and discipline. Orderlies and lower level staff were expected to salute Medical Officers and the patients were strictly separated on gender lines.

At its peak, the asylum was home to 6000 patients at any one time. One footnote in its history is that Jack the Ripper suspect Aaron Kosminski was at one time among its residents.
